Luxating All the Way Workshop
This workshop is designed to introduce to the student the use of dental luxators to proficiently extract teeth. Luxators are quite different from elevators, not in looks but certainly in use. It will demonstrate the physics behind their use. It will also show that this technique eliminates buccal bone removal and thus protects the patient while being as quick as any other technique. The workshop will also show how to create a proper flap that will help in the healing process.

MTPL02: Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV): Perioperative and Surgical Management
Gastric dilatation and volvulus is a life-threatening condition requiring immediate action. The dilated stomach compresses major vessels and the diaphragm, decreasing venous return to the heart, organ perfusion, and ventilatory capacity. Appropriate prioritization of diagnostics and treatments is clear when the pathophysiology is understood. We will discuss an organized, stepwise plan for managing the GDV patient, including pre-operative stabilization, intra-operative procedures (decompression, derotation, gastric resection and splenectomy when needed, and gastropexy), and post-operative care.

Train the Trainers: Teaching Emergency Procedures Workshop
This hands-on laboratory course is specifically tailored for veterinarians and technicians who teach veterinary students, new graduate veterinarians, and advanced veterinary technicians. The primary focus of this workshop is to equip educators with the skills to construct simple, low-fidelity models and utilize these models to teach emergency procedures effectively. Attendees are required to have a basic familiarity with the procedures before attending (this is a "how to teach the procedures with models" lab, not a how to perform the procedure lab!). The course will adopt George’s 5-step process for teaching clinical skills, starting with a brief presentation to introduce the models and George's 5-step process for teaching clinical skills. Participants will learn to build and then practice on models for key emergency procedures including chest tube insertion, tracheostomy, IV cutdown, and central line placement. The models will range from half-bucket models for chest tubes to more intricate setups for other procedures.

Value of Understanding Feline Cognition and Its Connection to Nutrition
Cat cognition, the way cats receive, process, and elect to respond to sensory information, is a vital but relatively under-studied aspect of feline health. Similarly, despite the fact that nutrition plays a vital role in supporting brain development and function in animals, the role of nutrition in supporting cognition in cats specifically is in its early stages. This presentation will provide an overview of what is known about cognitive function in cats, discuss the relationship between cognition and nutrition particularly in the context of cognitive decline, and give insight into the role clinicians play in supporting senior cats that may be experiencing signs of cognitive dysfunction.

Perfect Timing: Protecting Dogs From Tick-Borne Infections (Boehringer Ingelheim) - Evening Session
This presentation reviews current data on time to transmission of tick-borne infections in dogs. Feeding by common hard ticks is complex, and each tick requires several days to complete the feeding process. We will review current understandings of the mechanism of transmission for different tick-borne pathogens of dogs, including Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia spp., Rickettsia spp., and Babesia spp., and discuss studies designed to determine minimum transmission times and the effect of acaricides on this process. We will also go over testing strategies for canine tick-borne infections and strategies to effectively protect dogs from ticks and tick-borne diseases.

Prioritizing Protein: Nutritional Considerations for the Sick Pet
Dietary protein is important in both health and disease, and nutritional intervention often includes recommendations to adjust protein consumption. However, this is not always an easy recommendation to make in the clinical setting; assessing and quantifying protein intake can be challenging, and implementing changes in dietary protein is rarely straightforward. This lecture will focus on practical methods of assessing protein intake and recommending modifications in dietary protein for canine and feline patients with protein-responsive medical conditions.

Early Cancer Diagnosis: Don’t Miss the Warning Signs (IDEXX) - Breakfast Session
This session will focus on the consideration and diagnosis of cancer earlier in the clinical course with integration into the existing clinical algorithm. The gathering of information starts from history-taking with emphasis on specific open-ended questions. A physical examination can offer several worrisome clinical signs leading to a suspicion of cancer. Armed with this information, routine blood work and diagnostics able to be performed in-house or at the reference lab starts to round out this clinical picture and helps to form a differential list for specific cancers. This differential list can be used to guide further recommendations to clients, including diagnostics (including those that can be performed at the clinic and those that are advanced), referral to specialty hospitals, or empirical therapy. The session will then close with an overview of the current offerings of diagnostics on the market which may aid in early detection of cancer in companion animals.

It’s Always Tick Season
Changes in climate, habitat, and wildlife host populations in recent decades has led to an exponential increase in tick populations as well as both geographic and temporal expansion of tick activity. More ticks, more places, and for many more days of the year means protecting pets from ticks has never been more important. This presentation will explain the factors contributing to increased tick risk and describe strategies to meet the growing challenge of a tick season that never really ends.

Vanquishing Feline Vector-Borne Disease
This presentation will review some of the common vector-borne infections, focusing on heartworm disease and tick-transmitted diseases, that threaten feline health. Ticks pose a significant year-round risk to cats through the pathogens they can transmit, including agents of cytauxzoonosis, tularemia, borreliosis, and anaplasmosis. Heartworm disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis, is a serious, often life-threatening parasitic infection in cats. While the condition is well known, there are several misperceptions concerning the risk, diagnosis, management, and need for prevention in our feline patients. In this presentation, key insights related to these parasites will be shared and preventive measures will be discussed.

Management and Prevention of Feline Upper Respiratory Infections in Animal Shelters
Feline upper respiratory infections (URI) are arguably the most common infectious disease faced by animal shelters in the United States. Animal shelters are stressful environments for cats, and stress is known to reactivate latent feline herpesvirus infections, one of the major causes of feline URI. Development of disease often occurs without actual pathogen transmission, so a holistic approach involving stress reduction is required to minimize and prevent disease. This session will review major pathogens, transmission, risk factors for infection, diagnostics, treatment, and most importantly, prevention of feline URI in animal shelter populations. Housing for Physical and Emotional Health in Shelters and Boarding Facilities
Animal shelters and boarding facilities have similar health and welfare concerns. These densely populated settings present unique challenges for maintaining physical and behavioral health of dogs and cats. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters provide updated evidence-based guidelines that can also be useful for clinics offering boarding services. The quality and set-up of housing (both cages/kennels and cage-free designs) plays a crucial role in preventing and managing disease in population settings. Poor quality housing is one of the greatest shortcomings observed in animal shelters and can substantially impact physical and emotional health. This session will review primary enclosure recommendations, isolation housing, considerations for puppies and kittens, separation of species, and the importance of providing enrichment and hiding spaces. From Cat Cafés To Communal Shelter Housing: Considerations for Cohousing
Cohousing, or group housing, refers to keeping more than one animal in a primary enclosure. This practice can improve animal welfare, efficiency of daily animal care, and the visitor experience (including volunteers and adopters). However, cohousing is not suitable for every situation, and shelters must pay careful attention to remaining within their humane capacity for care. With careful attention to individual animal health, cohousing can provide many behavioral benefits, including opportunities for play, socialization, and a more enriched environment that may contribute to a shorter length of stay in the shelter. This session will review designs for primary cohousing enclosures, selection of and monitoring of animals in cohousing, and unique considerations for cat cafés. New Since Vet School: Rewriting the CIRDC Textbook (Merck Animal Health) - Industry Lunch
The pathogens of canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) are constantly upgrading their technological armament, allowing them to spread easily and escape the immune system while wreaking havoc upon canine airways. At Merck Animal Health, we thought it was about time to show them some of our technological upgrades, with innovative vaccines and next level technology that rewrites the CIRDC chapters of our textbooks and allows us to protect pets in ways never before accomplished.

SGLT2 Inhibitors and Cats With Diabetes: What Have We Learned So Far?
These past few years have been all about the use of FDA approved sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in the treatment of newly diagnosed cats with diabetes mellitus (DM) in the US. Use of these drugs over the last few years has increased our knowledge and experience with their use in cats. Efficacy and adverse events observed in field studies and clinical experiences will be discussed. Appropriate case selection and monitoring will be detailed. Future applications and potential benefits of SGLT2i in veterinary medicine will be highlighted.

The Evolution of Veterinary Drug Compounding: Where Are We Now and What Should You Know? (Boehringer Ingelheim) - Industry Lunch
The path followed by veterinary compounding has been circuitous and often difficult to follow. This has led to misunderstanding—and potential misuse. While a compounded animal drug can be critically important to some patients, it nonetheless can increase the risk of adversity. This session will focus on the role that compounding of animal drugs should have in the provision of safe and effective drug therapy.

Heartworm Disease: Timely Updates on an Age-Old Problem (Boehringer Ingelheim) - Breakfast Session
Dirofilaria immitis is an extremely common and often life-threatening parasitic infection, with approximately 1 million dogs testing positive annually in the U.S. While the condition is common, there are still many misperceptions concerning the life cycle and transmission of this mosquito-vectored disease. Additionally, numerous questions still arise concerning the accuracy of diagnostic procedures and resistance to the preventives and proper adulticidal therapy. This presentation will attempt to provide insights into our changing understanding of heartworm infections in dogs and the opportunities that exist to provide better protection for our pet companions.

LarPar Workshop: Fundamentals, Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatments
GOLPP affects a large population of dogs but many go undiagnosed, or if diagnosed, do not have access to optimal treatment options. Owners require education on the treatment options so they can make informed decisions and regardless of what they choose (surgical or non-surgical). We should be familiar with the course of clinical disease, discussing options, delivering appropriate interventions or where to refer these patients. Cricoarytenoid laryngoplasty (“tie-back”) surgery is the most common surgical option. In this laboratory, you will learn the anatomy of the larynx, what is involved in this surgery and have the opportunity to practice on cadavers. Diagnosis, anesthesia, short and long-term perioperative care and non-surgical treatment plans will be covered. This will educate you on all aspects of this disease, teach you what options there are, give you the opportunity to test your surgical skills and decide if this is a procedure you want to offer.

Small Ruminants for Small Animal Practitioners Workshop
As the veterinary world changes, more people are having pet goats and sheep; as small animal practitioners, we are now seeing more of these patients than previously. Knowing basic working knowledge of small ruminants, such as breeds, anatomy, vaccines, disbudding, common sedatives, parasites, and reproductive problems, is becoming more important in the small animal side of vet medicine. The small animal practitioner can benefit from this increase in small ruminant pets by expanding their practice scope, increasing production and revenue, and becoming more familiar with the growing industry of pet goats and sheep. This workshop is to give those unfamiliar with small ruminants an opportunity to relearn some of the basics that can help them incorporate small ruminants back into their practice.

Stayin’ Alive: CPR Training for the Veterinary Team
“I HAVE A CODE!” This phrase is enough to get any veterinary professional’s own heart pounding, and for good reason. When a patient undergoes cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), necessitating the intervention of veterinary professionals implementing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), amongst other lifesaving maneuvers, it can be VERY stressful. If we know not only what to do, but how & why we’re doing it, we are better medical professionals for it & our patients – and their families – benefit. This course addresses when/where CPA may occur, how to be prepared as both an individual and a practice, and how to utilize the RECOVER guidelines appropriately and effectively.

Basic ECGs: The Hows and Wherefores
The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the best method for diagnosing and characterizing cardiac arrhythmias, and as such it is a common test done in all veterinary practices. Proper techniques for collecting and understanding what one is looking at is critical for making an accurate diagnosis of arrhythmias. This skill set is well within the reach of veterinary technicians. The presentation will discuss the theory of electrocardiography, proper techniques for acquiring an ECG, understanding an approach to interpretation including Mean Electrical Axis, heart rate and wave form measurements. It is suited to any experience level of veterinary technician or veterinarian just seeking to hone their arrhythmia diagnosis skills.

Leading With Heart: Championing Early Intervention for Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease and Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Dogs (Boehringer Ingelheim) - Nurse/Technician Breakfast Session
This continuing education presentation for veterinary technicians is part of the Boehringer Ingelheim Tech Champions Program. The goal of this program is to empower veterinary technicians with the knowledge and skills to educate pet owners about myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), 2 conditions that can lead to congestive heart failure (CHF) in dogs. MMVD alone accounts for a majority of canine heart disease cases in the United States. However, intervention during the preclinical phase of MMVD can delay the onset of CHF in dogs. Veterinary technicians will acquire communication tools and strategies to initiate conversations and articulate the benefits of early identification of MMVD to engage dog owners in proactive screening and diagnostic testing.

Trotting Through the Nutrition Assessment in Horses
When performing initial intake on patients (at EVERY visit) to include temperature, pulse, respiration and pain, it is important to remember the 5th aspect – Nutrition! Nutrition is critical because it impacts every living cell within the body. The nutrition screening doesn’t require a lot of time and can identify areas at increased risk for nutrition-related conditions or illnesses that could benefit from a more thorough nutrition assessment. A thorough nutrition screening encompasses obtaining an accurate body weight, body condition score, muscle condition score, cresty neck score, and an abbreviated diet history. Recognizing that every horse requires adequate and balanced nutrition to support health and nutrition-related disease, it is vital that veterinary professionals adopt nutrition screening as part of the vital assessments. GI Effects of Chemotherapy
This lecture explores the dual effects of chemotherapy: its efficacy in targeting cancer cells and the resultant side effects on the gastrointestinal (GI) system. Chemotherapy disrupts cell division, preventing cancer cell growth, but also impacts normal, rapidly dividing GI cells, leading to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and mucositis. In veterinary medicine, prioritizing patient quality of life is vital, making the understanding and management of these side effects critical. The lecture highlights the mechanisms by which chemotherapy drugs affect the cell cycle and emphasizes the significance of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) and diarrhea. It also examines specific drugs known for their varying degrees of GI effects. Strategies for managing these side effects, including antiemetics, proton pump inhibitors, mucosal protectants, probiotics, prebiotics, and analgesics, are discussed, along with the potential need for hospitalization and supportive care in severe cases. In summary, this lecture provides essential insights into managing chemotherapy-induced GI side effects to optimize cancer treatment outcomes while preserving patient well-being. How To Interpret a Forage Analysis
When thinking about feeding horses, it is known that many horses can be maintained on forage alone, suggesting a “forage first” concept. In addition to feeding forage first, manipulating the forage choice to have the greatest impact on the horse’s health and economical effect, can really be improved by knowing the nutritional value of the hay. Not all forages are created equal and not all horses need the same forage. Therefore, being able to accurately collect a forage sample, perform a physical hay assessment and understand the basic components of a forage analysis can impact the nutrition support available to your client, either through the veterinary team or veterinary/equine nutritionist.
Following this session the participant should feel confident in: -Outlining the appropriate collect techniques for hay/forage sampling -Perform a physical assessment on hay -Understanding the basic components of a forage analysis Speaker(s): Mary Passmore, LVMT, VTS (LAIM), MSSW Ashley Self, MS, LVT, VTS (Nutrition)

Chemotherapy Induced Sepsis
Chemotherapy-induced sepsis is a rare but critical complication in veterinary oncology that demands swift recognition and management. This lecture will explore the mechanisms of chemotherapy, focusing on its effects on the immune system, particularly on white blood cells. Understanding how chemotherapy leads to neutropenia and how the nadir periods of white blood cells can create an increased risk of infection is key to grasping this condition. The lecture will also cover the distinction between general sepsis and chemotherapy-induced sepsis, discussing the importance of recognizing early clinical signs, such as fever, lethargy, and inappetence. Attendees will learn how to differentiate between chemotherapy side effects and the more dangerous symptoms of neutropenia. Treatment protocols vary depending on the severity of neutropenia and presenting symptoms, and we will examine the strategies used to treat and prevent sepsis, including the use of antibiotics and supportive therapies. Additionally, the presentation will cover preventative measures for future chemotherapy treatments to mitigate the risk of recurrence, enhancing the quality of life for oncology patients. Feline Lymphoma: Forget All You Thought You Knew About Lymphoma, Because Cats
Lymphoma is a systemic disease of the lymphatic system. The most commonly known type of lymphoma is found in canines and causes generalized peripheral lymphadenopathy. In cats, everything is different. Feline lymphoma poses complex challenges in veterinary medicine due to its diverse anatomical presentations and intricate diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. This presentation explores various types of feline lymphoma, including gastrointestinal, mediastinal, nasal, renal, nodal, cutaneous, and central nervous system lymphomas, emphasizing their clinical presentations and diagnostic methods. Grading lymphomas aids in treatment planning, with low-grade lymphomas generally associated with better outcomes. Treatment strategies, primarily chemotherapy-based, vary depending on subtype, grade, and stage. The presentation concludes with the importance of ongoing research into personalized therapeutic approaches to improve outcomes and quality of life for affected cats. Everything but the Kitchen Sink! Utilizing the Whole Anesthetic Protocol
Utilizing the entire anesthetic protocol and all if it's components is something that is often taken for granted. In this lecture, we will discuss the benefits of each step, from take home meds before the day of surgery, preoperative options for premedications, perioperative drugs, and lastly, postoperative options to help benefit your patients. The goal will be to hopefully encourage a look at different ways to use analgesics and anesthetics to help decrease the negative side effects of agents on patients, and increase the benefits that the anesthetic and analgesic drugs can offer our patients.

Over the past decade the parasite has made major movements around North America, but where?? and how?? and WHY?? We'll walk through what we know about the risk this parasite poses to pets and people including new diagnostic options and the role of routine tapeworm control as a measure for risk reduction. While "slow-moving", this zoonotic threat might already by in your area! Stop in and see the best ways to stay informed and vigilant!

DEA - What You NEED To Know
In this session we will explain the three broad requirements for hospitals using controlled drugs. We'll discuss the registration requirements for all veterinarians, including relief and associate doctors. We'll dispell some common myths about security, staff member access and security. Finally, we'll review the big picture requirements for logs and recordkeeping. Note: unfortunately we will not have time to get into detailed descriptions of individual log entries, but we will suggest sources for that information during the session.

Legal Liability - Employment Law Changes You Need to Know
With every Presidential election, a new group of laws come into effect - especially in the area of employment law. This seminar shall touch on employment laws in effect at the beginning of 2025 and what veterinary workplaces should expect for the coming year. Interactive questions are encouraged - especially related to "real life" situations - such as hot topics like political speech at the workplace (no, it's not protected "freedom of speech") and employees' rights to complain about management (no demanding "kindness" or "respect" for all situations). Join us for lots of fun while learning (or unlearning) extent of disciplinary actions and boundless reasonable accommodations in the new, real world of employment laws.
