Luxating All The Way Workshop
This workshop is designed to introduce to the student the use of dental luxators to proficiently extract teeth. Luxators are quite different from elevators, not in looks but certainly in use. It will demonstrate the physics behind their use. It will also show that this technique eliminates buccal bone removal and thus protects the patient while being as quick as any other technique. The workshop will also show how to create a proper flap that will help in the healing process.

MTPL02: Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV): Perioperative and Surgical Management
Gastric dilatation and volvulus is a life-threatening condition requiring immediate action. The dilated stomach compresses major vessels and the diaphragm, decreasing venous return to the heart, organ perfusion, and ventilatory capacity. Appropriate prioritization of diagnostics and treatments is clear when the pathophysiology is understood. We will discuss an organized, stepwise plan for managing the GDV patient, including pre-operative stabilization, intra-operative procedures (decompression, derotation, gastric resection and splenectomy when needed, and gastropexy), and post-operative care.

MC10: What To Do When Fluids Don’t Work
Have you ever had that case that had persistent hypotension, tachycardia, decreased level of consciousness despite adequate fluid resuscitation? What tells you they don’t need more fluids? Let’s explore those questions and review the interventions to consider when fluids are not enough.
The objectives will be to recognize when fluid resuscitation has not achieved resuscitation goals, identify what problems can mimic hypovolemic shock, learn how to intervene. LarPar Workshop: Fundamentals, Surgical and Non-surgical Treatments
GOLPP affects a large population of dogs but many go undiagnosed, or if diagnosed, do not have access to optimal treatment options. Owners require education on the treatment options so they can make informed decisions and regardless of what they choose (surgical or non-surgical). We should be familiar with the course of clinical disease, discussing options, delivering appropriate interventions or where to refer these patients. Cricoarytenoid laryngoplasty (“tie-back”) surgery is the most common surgical option. In this laboratory, you will learn the anatomy of the larynx, what is involved in this surgery and have the opportunity to practice on cadavers. Diagnosis, anesthesia, short and long-term perioperative care and non-surgical treatment plans will be covered. This will educate you on all aspects of this disease, teach you what options there are, give you the opportunity to test your surgical skills and decide if this is a procedure you want to offer.

Small Ruminants for Small Animal Practitioners Workshop
As the veterinary world changes, more people are having pet goats and sheep; as small animal practitioners, we are now seeing more of these patients than previously. Knowing basic working knowledge of small ruminants, such as breeds, anatomy, vaccines, disbudding, common sedatives, parasites, and reproductive problems, is becoming more important in the small animal side of vet medicine. The small animal practitioner can benefit from this increase in small ruminant pets by expanding their practice scope, increasing production and revenue, and becoming more familiar with the growing industry of pet goats and sheep. This workshop is to give those unfamiliar with small ruminants an opportunity to relearn some of the basics that can help them incorporate small ruminants back into their practice.

Train the Trainers: Teaching Emergency Procedures Workshop
This hands-on laboratory course is specifically tailored for veterinarians and technicians who teach veterinary students, new graduate veterinarians, and advanced veterinary technicians. The primary focus of this workshop is to equip educators with the skills to construct simple, low-fidelity models and utilize these models to teach emergency procedures effectively. Attendees are required to have a basic familiarity with the procedures before attending (this is a "how to teach the procedures with models" lab, not a how to perform the procedure lab!). The course will adopt George’s 5-step process for teaching clinical skills, starting with a brief presentation to introduce the models and George's 5-step process for teaching clinical skills. Participants will learn to build and then practice on models for key emergency procedures including chest tube insertion, tracheostomy, IV cutdown, and central line placement. The models will range from half-bucket models for chest tubes to more intricate setups for other procedures.

Wound Management for Veterinary Nurses/Technicians Workshop
Veterinary nurses/technicians play a major role in wound management. In this hands-on workshop, you will increase your understanding of the phases of wound healing and learn moist wound healing techniques, which are now the standard of care (no more wet-to-dry bandages!). These techniques speed healing, increase patient comfort, and decrease client cost. Skills taught include wound assessment, proper antiseptic dilution and lavage techniques, selection and application of moisture retentive dressings (such as calcium alginate, hydrocolloid, hydrophilic foam, and hydrogel), placing bandages and securing them in challenging locations, and managing passive and active suction drains, skin stretchers, and stents. The techniques learned in this workshop will expand and enhance your wound management skills, benefiting your patients and your practice.

Feline Perineal Urethrostomy; A Novel Approach Workshop
This half-day workshop will begin by teaching participants a novel approach to performing a feline perineal urethrostomy. Attendee's will learn how this approach can make it so much easier to visualize the pertinent regional anatomy and thus facilitate a more predictably successful outcome.
Young cats are prone to nasopharyngeal, external ear canal and middle ear polyps. Polyp location dictates the surgeons approach. This lecture will discuss each approach and the lab will focus on removing middle ear polyps via a ventral bulla osteotomy. If you were ever thinking about learning one skin flap to incorporate into your practice, it would be the caudal superficial epigastric axial pattern flap. It is one of the most predictably successful flaps we have with the versatility to address wounds or defects in many anatomic locations. In this lab, we will outline the ‘rules’ that dictate flap success and perform the flap in the lab. Tibial Plateau-Leveling Osteotomy Workshop, Presented By Securos
We are proud to offer a comprehensive learning experience for our TPLO course. Since the lecture is online and completed before the day of the lab, we maximize the amount of hands-on experience you receive. You can expect to plan the surgery for your cadavers with on-site x-rays, assist in one surgery, lead in another, and then receive technique criticism from the instructor on your cadaver’s post-op x-rays all before lunch. After lunch you get to do it all again, so you can see experience real-time improve from your first case to your second.
The TPLO course is for veterinarians who have a thorough knowledge of stifle anatomy, stifle surgery experience, and prior training in bone plating techniques and principles.

Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery for Small Animals Workshop
In this case-based and hands-on workshop, you will learn how to: remove cutaneous and subcutaneous masses with adequate margins, close oddly-shaped defects, eliminate dog-ears, relieve tension with skin stretching and stents, place closed suction drains, and perform subdermal plexus flaps (H-, V-to-Y- and Z-plasties, skin fold flap, et al) and the caudal superficial epigastric axial pattern flap. You will get to practice these techniques on cadavers using faux masses or wounds you create based on your own patients, or on clinical cases presented in the workshop. With the hands-on experience and coaching provided in this workshop, you will expand the repertoire of mass removal and wound closure techniques you can confidently offer to your patients and make surgery more fun for you.

Solidify, Enhance and Expand Your Surgical Skills Workshop
This workshop is for any veterinarian who wants to solidify, enhance, and expand their surgical skills. We learn fundamental surgery skills as a student, but many of the nuances don’t stick because we don’t yet have the experience to assimilate them. Now out in practice, it would be nice to have a course to finetune skills and learn new ones. Using models and cadavers, you will practice efficient and effective instrument handling, various suture patterns (including intradermal, fingertrap, mattress, and inverting) and knots (including hand ties, Aberdeen, and friction), tacking and walking sutures, closing oddly-shaped wounds and eliminating dog-ears, placing stents and drains, and safely ligating large vessels. With the hands-on experience and coaching provided in this lab, you will hone your surgical skills, making surgery more fun for you and more beneficial for your patients and practice.

Block That Pain - Dental Nerve Blocks Workshop
Pain management is more than the latest popular terminology. It is an important part of veterinary dentistry. Many of the procedures performed on animals are painful and it is our duty as technicians to ensure that our patients are as comfortable as possible. The delivery of local nerve blocks prior to performing many dental procedures or oral surgery is a great way to create preemptive analgesia. This can often be incorporated into a multimodal plan for pain control. After this workshop, attendees will be able to -

Mastering Dental Radiology Interpretation Workshop
Ensuring dental radiographs are of diagnostic quality is the first hurdle. However, once we begin evaluating dental radiographs, we have to be careful to avoid over-interpretation.
This workshop will unlock the secrets to professionally evaluating each dental radiograph for diagnostic quality, normal vs. abnormal findings, and ensuring we better understand images when looking for evidence of periodontal disease, tooth resorption, and other not-so-uncommon pathologies and atypical findings. We will learn how to properly document these findings in our medical records. An emphasis will be placed on obtaining multiple images and understanding common normal findings. This will be a computer-based workshop. MTPL01: Q & A - Small Ruminants for Small Animal Practitioners
This meeting is to give those unfamiliar with small ruminants an opportunity to ask questions about some of the basics that can help them incorporate small ruminants back into their practice.

MC05: Pediatric Dentistry for the General Practice
Young dogs and cats have dental abnormalities, too. For valid reasons, this masterclass emphasizes the need to perform proper oral examinations on puppies and kittens, including full-mouth dental radiographs under anesthesia. We will also discuss how to document oral exam findings on pediatric dental charts and recognize issues that require intervention. Potential treatments will be addressed using a case-based approach. The veterinary team will learn to advocate for our adolescent patients to ensure a comfortable and pain-free mouth.

Although aggression has long been recognised as a normal response in all species, owners are still perplexed when their beloved dog bite or threatens to bite them or their family. The underlying reasons for aggression will be discussed and the helping owners understand and manage their dog's behavior will be explored. Extracapsular Stabilization of the Cranial Cruciate Deficient Stifle in Toy Breeds of Dogs Workshop
Acute cranial cruciate ligament injury is a common problem in Toy Breeds of dogs. The injury is a complete tear of the CrCL resulting in a highly unstable stifle causing severe clinical dysfunction. This workshop will address modalities to arrive at a correct diagnosis, surgical approach and and stabilization with a novel suture/anchor system placed at the isometric sites. In that medial meniscal injury often accompainies CrCL ligament injury, proper systematic exploration of the stifle is a paramount component of the surgery and will be dressed in detail. Ample laboratory time will be structured with lectures to provide participants with the confidence to include this technique into their practice upon returning home. Peri-operative pain management, detailed post-operative care, complications and their management will conclude the course.

Up and Away - The Best Way to Schmear Workshop
While technology & AI have given us faster analyses of our samples, we as VTs are still the ones in charge of making those viable samples. In this session we’ll not only discuss the methodology behind blood films, but do a deeper dive into why they’re necessary, discuss disease processes that they’re pertinent in diagnosing, and even take a stab at doing them – literally. It’s all in the wrist & we’ll take it up and away, together!

Virtual: Oral Fracture Repair: Non-Invasive Techniques for the General Practitioner
The primary objective for repair of maxillofacial fractures in small animals is return to normal function. Caudal malalignment of 2-3 mm may prevent closure of the rostral portion of the mouth by a full cm. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain occlusal alignment while providing adequate stability for bony union. Damage to teeth, tooth roots, and neurovascular structures of the mandible and maxilla is often overlooked in deference to rigid application of metallic implants for repair of maxillofacial fractures. Non-invasive techniques can provide for occlusal maintenance while maintaining optimal oral and dental health. This lecture will review methods in models and clinical cases to apply wire and acrylics for oral fracture repair. Speaker(s): Mark M. Smith, VMD, DACVS, DAVDC

Virtual: Disease Outbreak Management in Shelters
Shelters nationwide are experiencing an increase in infectious disease outbreaks as dogs and cats remain in care longer and shelters reach capacity. This presentation will explore the risk factors that contribute to these outbreaks and provide strategies for reducing the incidence of infectious diseases within shelter populations. While some diseases, like Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD), are self-limiting, others, such as Feline Panleukopenia, are life-threatening. Even mild diseases can raise welfare concerns and significantly impact a shelter's capacity to save lives. Attendees will learn about the risk factors, transmission, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnostic testing, and individual treatment of key infectious pathogens, including Canine Parvovirus, Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, Feline Panleukopenia, and Feline Upper Respiratory Tract Disease in shelters. The presentation will also cover population management strategies to reduce the risk of serious outbreaks and discuss general outbreak management for each of these common pathogens. Virtual: Enhancing Animal Welfare in Shelter With the 5 Domains Model
This presentation dives into a comprehensive understanding of animal welfare in animals shelter and the shift moving beyond the traditional Five Freedoms.
The audience will explore the limitations of focusing solely on avoiding negative experiences and learn how positive experiences and welfare play a crucial role in promoting a life worth living for animals. It will introduce the audience to the Five Domains model, which builds upon the Five Freedoms and illustrates how various factors, including nutrition, environment, physical health, and behavioral opportunities, combine to shape an animal's mental state and overall welfare. The model introduces a spectrum for each domain, allowing for a nuanced evaluation of an animal's well-being, encompassing more than just the absence of pain. Through engaging examples, such as shelter environments and stray animals in foster care, the presentation will demonstrate how even when certain needs are not entirely satisfied, animals can still experience positive welfare states. Similarly, the audience will understand that negative mental states can arise, even if only one critical need remains unmet. The presentation will emphasize the importance of meeting not only the basic needs of animals but also enriching their lives through social contact and appropriate animal training. By doing so, the audience will gain insights into how increasingly satisfied nutritional, environmental, physical, and emotional needs positively impact an animal's mental state, leading to physical manifestations of good health and behavior. Attendees will walk away with a renewed perspective on animal welfare and be equipped to implement a holistic approach in their practices, promoting better care and well-being for animals in their care or within their sphere of influence. Proper nutritional management is one of the most important factors in managing health and disease in pets. As clients become more aware of the importance of nutrition in their own health, they will expect this same higher standard of nutritional care for their cats. The veterinary healthcare team should be the preferred, expert source of the best nutritional information for pets. Proper nutritional management is one of the most important factors in maximizing health, performance, and longevity in cats, in addition to managing disease conditions. This session will review the physiology and behavior of feeding cats, along with tips to ensure cats are getting the nutrients they need.

Virtual: The Regurgitating/Gagging Patient: What To Do When Acid Suppressants Aren’t Working?
Esophageal disorders in dogs, and less frequently in cats, are a common reason for veterinary consultation. These conditions manifest through a variety of clinical signs, with regurgitation and dysphagia being the most prominent. However, veterinarians must also be alert to subtler indicators such as bruxism, hypersalivation, soft coughing, lip licking, grass eating, pica, aerophagia, decreased appetite, or weight loss. The etiology of these disorders can be broadly categorized into structural and functional causes, each requiring a distinct therapeutic approach. While structural issues often have clear diagnostic and treatment pathways, functional disorders present a more complex challenge, particularly when the underlying cause remains elusive. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) stands out as a common culprit, often responsive to symptomatic therapy. However, the clinical conundrum arises when patients fail to respond to standard GERD treatments, and structural abnormalities have been ruled out. This seminar aims to address this critical question: How should clinicians proceed when gastric acid suppression fails to alleviate esophageal signs? Over the next hour, we will explore advanced diagnostic strategies, alternative treatment modalities, and emerging perspectives on managing refractory esophageal disorders in companion animals. Virtual: Ascending Placentitis: Managing One of the Most Common Causes of Equine Pregnancy Loss
Placentitis is one of the most common causes of late-term pregnancy loss in the mare, accounting for up to approximately one-third of all late-term losses. Multiple varieties of placentitis can occur, with ascending placentitis as one of the most commonly diagnosed in practice. Ascending placentitis involves the infection that arises from bacterial ascension through the caudal reproductive tract and cervix, causing inflammation and lesions at the level of the cervical star. Many cases of placentitis are diagnosed late in the course of the disease process when external signs of a compromised pregnancy may be seen or due to abortion or delivery of premature and potentially compromised foals. Therefore, premonitory clinical signs may be absent prior to pregnancy loss or abortion, making early diagnosis at times frustrating in the absence of high-risk pregnancy screening programs. This presentation will review common presentations of ascending placentitis, diagnosis and treatment. Speaker(s): Theresa Beachler, DVM, PhD, DACT

Virtual: Unleashing the Power of NSAIDs in Veterinary Oncology
Research in people revealed significant insights into the role of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in cancer prevention and management. Long-term NSAID use has been associated with a notable reduction in cancer incidence, slower disease progression, and decreased risk of cancer-related mortality and distant metastases. The effectiveness of NSAIDs in anti-cancer therapy was historically linked to their ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. However, recent research suggests that additional molecular targets may contribute to their beneficial effects. Tumor cells often exhibit similar cytokine, chemokine, and receptor profiles to inflammatory cells, indicating complex interactions between NSAIDs and the cancer microenvironment. Understanding these interactions is crucial for developing more effective cancer prevention and treatment strategies. NSAIDs' multifaceted role in oncology offers a promising avenue for further research and application, potentially leading to more targeted and effective cancer therapies. In veterinary oncology, the role of NSAIDs is not yet well-established, and there is limited robust, evidence-based information demonstrating their therapeutic benefits. While NSAIDs can play a crucial role in managing cancer-related pain and inflammation in dogs, potentially improving their quality of life, their actual "anti-cancer" actions are less established. This overview emphasizes the benefits and limitations of integrating NSAIDs into cancer treatment paradigms and encourages ongoing investigation into their broader implications in veterinary oncology. Virtual: The Dynamic Duo of the Oncologist and General Practitioner when Treating Veterinary Cancer Patients
Primary care veterinarians often collaborate closely with veterinary oncologists to provide comprehensive care for pets undergoing cancer treatment. This partnership is crucial, as primary care veterinarians are frequently responsible for several key aspects of a pet’s ongoing care. These responsibilities include monitoring laboratory results and administering supportive care medications designed to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy. Additionally, they play a vital role in observing and identifying signs of disease recurrence or progression through regular physical examinations and imaging. Given their involvement in these critical aspects of care, primary care veterinarians are integral to effectively managing oncology patients. They ensure continuity of care and help address any complications or changes in the patient’s condition that may arise between specialized oncology appointments. However, there can be variability in the comfort levels and preparedness of primary care veterinarians when it comes to these monitoring responsibilities. Some may feel less confident or require additional guidance on how to implement interim diagnostics and monitoring strategies effectively. This lecture will highlight the importance of interim diagnostics and monitoring strategies for companion animals receiving chemotherapy. It will specifically address how primary care veterinarians can implement these practices to ensure the best possible outcomes for their oncology patients. By enhancing their understanding and skills in these areas, primary care veterinarians can better support their patients and collaborate more effectively with veterinary oncologists. Virtual: Herding Cats and Toxic Teammates: Managing Toxic Team Dynamics in Veterinary Practices
In the bustling environment of veterinary practices, the quality of teamwork plays a pivotal role in delivering exceptional care to animals and maintaining the well-being of both patients and staff. However, like any workplace, veterinary teams can face challenges, including toxic dynamics that impede collaboration, communication, and overall practice effectiveness. This program aims to equip veterinary professionals with the knowledge and tools to recognize, address, and prevent toxic team dynamics, fostering a positive and supportive work environment.

Management of Feline Ureteral Obstruction
Feline ureteral obstructions are a significant and increasingly recognized cause of morbidity in cats. These obstructions often result from ureterolithiasis, strictures, or other pathologies causing partial or complete blockage of the ureter. The condition can lead to severe renal damage and acid base imbalances. Diagnosis of an obstruction can be challenging and treatment options are not without complications. This proceeding aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of feline ureteral obstructions, emphasizing the latest advancements and treatment protocols. Basic ECGs: The Hows and Wherefores
The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the best method for diagnosing and characterizing cardiac arrhythmias, and as such it is a common test done in all veterinary practices. Proper techniques for collecting and understanding what one is looking at is critical for making an accurate diagnosis of arrhythmias. This skill set is well within the reach of veterinary technicians. The presentation will discuss the theory of electrocardiography, proper techniques for acquiring an ECG, understanding an approach to interpretation including Mean Electrical Axis, heart rate and wave form measurements. It is suited to any experience level of veterinary technician or veterinarian just seeking to hone their arrhythmia diagnosis skills.
